Background History:

The department of Economics of Seva Bharati Mahavidyalaya started functioning from the academic session 1964-65 with Economics as a paper in B.A. Pass. Under the CBCS, Economics was offered as a general paper for both the courses of B.Sc. Honours and B.Sc. General till the academic session of 2022-23.Under the CCFUP, 2023 & NEP, 2020 which started from the academic session of 2023-24, Economics is being offered as a Minor Paper for 4-Year Undergraduate programme (Honours Course) and as a Major or Minor Paper in 3-year Undergraduate programme (Multidisciplinary Studies).Through the General Course of Economics in UG, students develop their knowledge about consumer behavior, market, production, national income, unemployment, poverty, inequality, sustainable development, banking and finance.After successful completion of the course, students also learn to prepare projects on various socio-economic issues and acquire skills of the basics of computer application required for data analysis.Students of Economics enjoy advantages in various competitive examinations including Civil Service.They also have potential careers in growing private sector companies, in trade, commerce & management.They also acquire necessary skills to work as research assistants on various socio-economic research projects.

The faculties of the Department of Economics teach different papers of Economics & Statistics in the Department of Commerce of Seva Bharati Mahavidyalaya and also take regular classes as well as work as project supervisors of Environmental Studies-the compulsory paper in the syllabus of Vidyasagar University. The faculties of this department also teach other multidisciplinary courses the activities of NGOs as Multidisciplinary Course (MDC) as part of CCFUP, 2023.The students securing highest marks in Economics (General) in the Final University Examination in each academic session are awarded ‘Purnima Mitra Memorial Award’ since 2016.
