Department of Geography

Background History:

The Geography Department was introduced in the college in 2005 with twenty students and two teaching faculties for General course students. Initially it was introduced as a combination subject of B.A/B.Sc General course. Later on, Geography (Hons.) was introduced in the year of 2006-2007. At present, the Department of Geography is a strong and resourceful department of the college and Vidyasagar University. About four hundred fifty students in Honours and one hundred eighty students in General have so far passed with B.A/B.Sc degree since 2007. Now, the department consists of one hundred thirty eight students in Honours and efficient & well-qualified teaching faculties and one laboratory assistant. The Department of Geography has regularly organized national, international and state-level seminars, workshops and also symposiums at different times from 2015. Two international seminars in 2019 & 2021 and in 2017 & 2018 and one state-level Seminar in 2018 and one workshop in 2015 have been arranged by the department on academic interest, policy making and community service in collaboration with UNESCO, Govt. of West Bengal, District Administration, NGOs. The department had organized Alumni Meet in 2017 for the interaction between the students and teachers and exchange of knowledge and academic understanding. The department publishes a Wall Magazine ‘Gatipath‘ every year. Temporal Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Eco-Tourism, Only One Earth and Biodiversity Conservation are the themes of Wall Magazine which is published by teachers and students of the department and is inaugurated by eminent guests and the Honorable Principal. The students of the department have participated in different scientific fairs, exhibitions, seminars and Govt. programmes.The department has been acting and performing as planning consultancy through innovative scientific model, field survey, research, planning and innovative methods for environment management and regional sustainable development in Jhargram District.

The faculties of the department have been involved as Chief Scientist & Expert in UN Forest Restoration programme-2030 and engaged as Chief Consultant & Advisory and Experts in Green Campus Project, Green Audit and Environment management programmes of different academic institutions like universities, colleges, Ramakrishna Mission and Govt. of West Bengal. The Department of Geography has been performing as planning and research consultant of implementing project in the college as Ground water Observation and research by Jala Shakti Bhavan, Govt of India and Rain water harvesting and ground water recharge by the Dept. of Water Resource and Ground Water Research, Govt. of West Bengal.At present, a major ICSSAR research project funded by MHRD, Govt. of India is being undertaken by the department since 2023.Faculties and students have participated and performed in different events in different Govt. and non- Govt. programmes. The department has been organizing different international observance days and cultural events like as Forest Day, Earth Day, Environment Day and Naveen Baran Utsav ( Apyayan), Annual Prize and Excellence Award distribution programme for students and Rangao-e-Prakriti (Basanta Utsab).The department has produced many outstanding and excellent students who are engaged in respectable positions in academic institutions and organizations, Government sectors and non-Govt.Sectors as well.

The department also publishes Wall Magazine “Gatipath” regularly to highlight the talents of the students in literary and cultural fields.
