Department of History

Background History:

Department of history is one of the oldest departments of the college and it has been catering to the demands of the students since the inception of the college on 15th of July 1964. Till 30th of May 1985, the department remained under the University of Calcutta. However, on 1st of June 1985 the department got the affiliation from Vidyasagar University. Initially, the department was permitted only to run B.A.Pass course but from the academic session 2003-2004 the department was given the permission to run three year degree course in History Honours. Over these long years, the department has been elucidating historical knowledge to students coming from different backgrounds of the society and inculcating within them a deep respect towards their history, heritage and culture.From time to time, eminent faculties and scholars have enriched the department with their valuable inputs and expertise on the subject. Presently the intake capacity of the department is 110 for the Honours course and near about 300 for the Pass course.

The department has one full time faculty and three SACT faculties. Regular class tests and continuous assessments are conducted in the department from time to time to engage the students in the academic activities and to grow their interest in the subject. Excursion and field surveys are regularly conducted by the learned faculties of the department to enrich the students with the knowledge of surface archaeology and to teach them how to deal with archival and museum records. Teachers motivation and students hard work and perseverance have always been the top priority of the department and will continue to be so in future.
